Actions - Current and Planned NJBC Projects
2010 is shaping up to be a very busy, and productive, year. Last year, most of our energies were devoted to setting up the organization, attracting membership and raising operating funds. Near the end of the year, we began to be more proactive, with the planning of New Jersey's first statewide Bicycle Summit. This year, the Summit is just the beginning! Check out some of our on-going and planned projects below. Hopefully, they will excite you enough to become a member or a sponsor, if you aren't already. And even better, become an active volunteer and work alongside us.
Legislative Issues
Bicycle Advocacy
- The New Jersey Bicycle Summit , held on February 27, in Denville, New Jersey, was the first meeting of its kind in our state. But it won't be the last. The 2011 edition will be bigger and better, and we will soon be looking for active volunteers and partners to build on this year's success, and into the future. And we will be moving the location to Trenton, NJ, for two reasons. First, it is geographically more central, but more importantly, it is where our politicians work. We intend that that will not only hear us, but see us?
- The National Bicycle Summit is being held by the League of American Bicyclists in Washington, DC, March 9 through March 12. NJBC will be there, as it will be organizing the 2010 New Jersey delegation. As of this writing, we have 15 members in our group, one of the largest delegations to this annual event. And there is still time to join us!
Bicycle Education
Bicycle Education will feature very prominently in NJBC's plans for 2010. We will be offering the League of American Bicyclist's popular Traffic Skills 101 classes, as well as bicycle commuting courses. These courses are all taught by League-trained Cycling Instructors (LCIs). We will also publicize other such courses taught by any other LCI in New Jersey, upon request, whether they are associated with NJBC or not. Check our education pages to see the latest course listings.
NJBC realizes that we need more LCIs in New Jersey and will also encourage and/or sponsor seminars to train these instructors. NJBC's President is now a League of American Bicyclists "Coach", certified to hold the three-day seminar that creates new LCIs. In April, 2010, a first LCI seminar was held in Parsippany, New Jersey, resulting in eight new instructors for our state. A second seminar is planned for September, 2010, in Hoboken, NJ.
These are just some of our ongoing and planned projects. Visit here often as activities increase. You may find something that appeals to your "volunteer" instinct. Or you may have a project of your own to add to the list!
