The State of Advocacy in New Jersey

At times, we think of bicycle advocates as running one large lawn service. We clear the lot, till the soil, and plant the seeds. Plenty of water, and plenty of patience. Then, one day, we see a small patch of green. A few days later, some more. One patch might be a success in Montclair. Another, a bicycle sharing program in Collingswood. A newly completed section of the East Coast Greenway. A town awakening to the possibility of including bicycle planning to make life better for its citizens.

All of these green patches grow, and start to fill in the bare spots and before you know it, there's a nice green lawn in your front yard. Carrying the analogy to its logical conclusion, all lawns need continuing care. We can't just sit back and rest - we must work together and keep the lawn healthy.

The New Jersey Bicycle Summit, on February 27, represents a "coming together" on a state-wide basis. More than 125 advocates, state, county and city administrators, clubs, shops, and interested individuals will meet in Denville, NJ, to devise a working plan for the years ahead. For a look at some of the organizations who will be represented at the summit, take a look at the attendee list to date.

This state-wide "Summit" is the first of its kind in New Jersey, but it won't be the last. 2011 will see us gather in Trenton, involving our state legislators in the process.

But, as stated above, we can't just sit back. And we (NJBC) don't plan to. So, what's next?

On June 4/5/6, NJBC, working with the East Coast Greenway Alliance, will host a "Winning Campaigns" seminar in Edison, NJ. The Alliance for Biking and Walking, in Washington, DC, will be sending its trainers to Edison to give biking and pedestrian organizations, and other organizations who support bike/ped objectives, the tools they need to grow and achieve their objectives.

Bicycle Education will be another prime focus for NJBC this year. We will be scheduling a series of Traffic Skills 101 classes this spring and summer, as well as highlighting other bike education efforts around the state. Watch for a new website section devoted to bike ed. And if you are teaching such courses, please let us know about them. We will do our best to help you market them.

NJBC membership is growing rapidly, as it now is approaching 150. For those of you who are already members, spread the word and get your friends to join. Others who are not, and reading this, please join the organization. As our membership grows, so does our strength.
